Welcome to Syntax, the podcast with the tastiest web development treats Out there, we've got a potluck for you today. This is where you submit the questions. We provide the answers. We got some really good questions about, type guards versus type assertions In TypeScript, when should you use 1 or the over the other? What do you think about proof of person? What about the new website? What about SEO? What about Cloudinary? Lots of really good questions today. Keep them coming, by the way. Go to syntax. Fm top right hand corner. There's a button Just ask a poll question.

Wes intro question segment

Guest 1

Hit that button and type your question in because we will answer it. We do this once a month with me, as always, is Mr. Scott How are you doing today, Scott? Oh, hey. I'm doing good, man. Doing really good.

Guest 2

I got An ear infection like a child.

Topic 2 01:00

Scott has ear infection

Guest 2

I I've been on antibiotics now for, like, 2 months. I'm just I'm over it, but I I'm so excited about all this stuff. I just ordered a a new audio interface Mhmm. For for my setup here that has onboard Digital signal processing and as an onboard EQ and all the compression stuff and really high level line signals. Like, I don't have to use Half the stuff that I'm currently using, and I'm so excited. It's made by Neumann.

Guest 2

And this looks like top Top of the line, everything. So I'm I'm super excited to have this new audio interface and maybe, maybe my audio quality won't change, or maybe you'll all of a sudden just be like, oh, that's Almost got a little bit of a different tambor to it.

Topic 3 01:31

Scott excited for new audio interface

Guest 1

What's, what's the model number for the one you got? It's the,

Guest 2

Neumann spelled, you know, you know n o y m a n? No. It's spelled n u, n n e u m a n n. It's it's a German word. They're they're like a, they're a company that's been around forever And has, like, the highest quality microphones, you know, just the top of the line microphones, a Norman, Just, what's the u u 47 or something? There there's they have, like, a long history of extremely good microphones.

Guest 2

Oh, yeah. So what they They have, like, really high quality preamps, high high quality mic stuff. And what they did is they bought a company that handles a lot of DSP, And they they handle these types of digital audio interfaces, and they were just like, well, what if we took the the unit that was already pretty good, And we just added our top of the line d s or we we added our top of the line everything, but there's software to it.

Guest 2

And then you mix that all together, and you have a really nice Unit here for digital audio conversion.

Guest 2

So, yeah, I'm excited for this thing. We'll travel right. Model number on the one you got. I wanna look it up. Oh, sorry. Neumann, MT48.

Scott getting Neumann MT48 audio interface

Guest 2

MT48.

Guest 1

So for people who don't know about audio, Scott and I run Like audio rack Mount boxes that does everything. It DS is the audio. It does expand or gate, Which is basically when and how much the audio should cut off when we stop talking, which is why you don't hear a lot of random background noise when we're talking there's all kinds of stuff in it.

Guest 1

And that's a hardware piece.

Topic 5 03:23

New interface replaces multiple pieces of gear

Guest 1

And Scott is moving to a box that Is it basically a mini computer, and it does the processing right on the box? I'm very interested in this because that and that that gets rid of

Guest 2

Two boxes and replaces it with a tiny little one. Right? Yeah. And I'm not positive that it's arm based, but I'm pretty sure it's arm based. I'm not entirely positive about that. But what's cool about it is you have Sliders, and you have, channels. I actually this is replacing this is replacing 3 well, 4 separate pieces of equipment that I have. It's replacing my Compressor. It's replacing my studio, monitor headphone amp. It's replacing my digital audio converter and my my preamp for my, To lift the signal, my Cloudlifter.

Guest 2

So it's replacing all of that in a not cheap little box, but a little box that has presets. It has, really high level, digital signal processing in terms of, baked in EQ, baked in compression algorithms, and all this stuff, but in a way that I'm gonna be able to snapshot all of this and have it be like you know, one of the big things that we have right now, my kids run-in here. My my equipment is accessible. They turn the knobs. They don't care.

Topic 6 04:33

Interface has presets and snapshots

Guest 2

This thing, if my kids turn the knobs on this thing, it will not matter. I can just hit the go back to your snapshot button. There's gonna be a lot of little nice things about it, but I'm very excited for the quality of it all. There's Ethernet on it.

Topic 7 04:46

Interface uses Ethernet

Guest 1

Why is that?

Guest 2

Because, this so part of the the the the, the hardware that this that Neumann bought that they've adapted into this box, That was, like, their big selling feature is doing audio over Ethernet, where you could send more than more. I I'm I'm gonna sound like a a total dunce talking about this, but, like, you can send more over that signal than just the straight up audio signal. You can send more information over it. That's as far as I understand. I'm not going to be using that feature because it's thunderbolt.

Guest 2

So I'm I'm going to have a just straight up into it as thunderbolt. Yeah. But one of the the cool things is that my mic Has such a low volume to it that I have to pump it up with this little box called a cloud lifter. Yeah. And that kind of inherently, It it inherently makes the signal worse in just a little bit way. It's it's gaining it up, but this is going to allow me to have a, do all of that essentially onboard in a much nicer So, yeah, I I think my audio quality might not be noticeable to you, the listener, that it's it's gotten a lot better, but it's going to get Better for sure. And it's going to get easier. This thing's small enough I can take it on the road with me. So do you remember when we did our live episode or our our quote unquote live episode from Winston's basement? Yeah. I I could bring my microphone in this little box, and that's it. I don't have to bring a whole ton of stuff. So, yeah, it it just Dropped. And I got a message saying that they really don't know when it's going to ship. So I was hoping that I would be getting it soon enough, but I'll let you know when it arrives, and I'll take some pictures. It's pretty cool. I'm curious when we will see something like this with, like, a GPU in it that will, like,

Topic 8 06:22

Future processing with GPUs

Guest 1

AI process your audio in real time. Like, I that that's kind of what this is. Right? But, like,

Guest 2

it I don't think there's any AI in it. There's no AI into it. It's just really nice quality. In fact, the, The EQ that's in it is like the exact same software EQ that's in some of the most expensive VSTs. So it's it's straight up, very good software

Guest 1

on a little box. You have to pay a is there a monthly subscription to this thing? No, thank God no. No, thank you. Okay, because like I have the Volt and it harasses you Really? To buy plug ins.

Guest 1

I think it comes with something, and you can you can just buy plug ins from any software vendor out there. But I had to, like, aggressively turn off all the, like, Stop trying to sell me stuff. I just bought, yeah, $500 box from you.

Topic 9 06:59

Plugins and subscriptions

Guest 1

But I love the Volta. It sounds it's

Topic 10 07:13

Comparing audio interfaces

Guest 2

Fantastic. Much better than the Scarlet. Yeah. Right? Kept going on me. It's funny because we've been running this whole podcast, which is now, You know, it was a big part of my career. Now it's basically my entire career right now. So, like, and before that, you know, recording courses, like, well, maybe I should be getting in some nicer preamps than these, like, $99 scarlet ones that came with the thing. Alright. Let's get into the first question we have from Longtime listener, Paige Niederinghouse.
